Southgate Mall felt the official starting date of the 2010 World Cup for the first time on African soil and in close proximity at Soccer City by hosting an event themed “Southgate Mall World Cup opening mania” at the Wimpy Court on Friday 11 June 2010 in celebration of this historic accomplishment.
The event started at 12:00pm with music exciting the crowd filled with the young and old. Children were seated at the Wimpy Court writing their good luck messages to Bafana Bafana while a section was dedicated for face painting with over 300 adults faces painted in the South African flag. The crowd was taught the diski dance which was the highlight of the event with the crowd dancing in craze.
Shoppers were urged to shop for R200, enter their slip into a draw box and four winners were announced, they won a goodie bag consisting of Marlin stationery, vuvuzelas, soccer balls, football Friday mini bags and more. The event ended off with the children reading out to the crowd their Bafana Bafana goodluck messages followed by the South African National Athem being sung by all.
This event united Southgate Mall shoppers and tenants as they joyfully blew their vuvuzelas and dressed in football outfits. The Mall has also geared up for the World Cup in style as flags of all countries participating in the tournament have been hung around the mall.
The official 2010 World Cup opening ceremony kicked off at 13h30 at Soccer City which is in close radius to Southgate Mall, “Southgate Mall World Cup opening mania” added to the historic legacy that the World Cup will leave in Africa. The World Cup opening match was viewed at no charge at the Africa United Southgate Park and on the LCD screens in the Food Court.

Head of Class Salon Manager Sunday Nkambule celebrated his 40th birthday on the 14th June 2010 in style by pampering six children from Barona Child Care and Support at Southgate Mall. At 10:30am the children arrived at Head of Class the Salon that Sunday manages on a daily basis in Southgate Mall. Accompanied by two caregivers Thuli Khubeka and Titi Sealanyane the children were excited to be beneficiaries of Sundays 40th birthday and celebrating it with him.
Friends that assisted in the success of the festivities for the children of this birthday was Bafana Zondo who is a lab assistant at Spec Savers in Southgate Mall, FNB in Southgate Mall and Head of Class patrons who have been donating money since early March 2010. FNB Service Manager Lungelo Ngabaza and the CSR Mr Shane Sono were instrumental in the success of the birthday celebrations. “I am happy, proud of Sunday as he has set a good example for everybody” said Lungelo Ngabaza. The birthday goodie bag contained of items that are mandatory for success in life for these children. The birthday goodie bag contained pens, highlighters, FNB scarf’s, a vuvuzela and a soccer ball and school shoes. “Barona Children Care Support was chosen as beneficiaries reasoning children are close to my heart and these children deserve all the love and luxuraries that he can give know on this particular day” said Sunday.

Background facts about Sunday Nkambule
Sunday grew up in Mpumalanga in a poverty stricken household where he had to walk to school. He arrived in Gauteng Province in April 1988. He started working for Head of Class in 1998 as a stylist where he then moved to a branch at Southgate Mall in 2000. He was promoted to Stylists Manager. In 2004 he left his employment and occupied a vacancy of Director of Stylists at The Knot Salon from 2005- mid 2007. He then established his own hair zone were his clientele grew by the day from mid 2007 to March 2008. His dream was to pamper children for lunch and movies on one of his birthdays ideally on the 14th of June 2010. Sunday lives in Orange Farm and has four children whom the eldest daughter is Nomzamo who is 16 years old.

| Southgate Mall Super Kidz Club is interactive, exciting, educational, and informative for all its members - this event was no exception. This fun filled event was themed “Dress up as your favourite character”. The event started from 11h00am and ended at 14h30pm at the Wimpy Court in Southgate Mall on the 29th May 2010. The educational and entertaining activities that the kids engaged in ranged from making new friends, colouring in, fitting puzzles to reading books. An Angel narrated a story telling session where kids were entertained and joined in with the animation. A photo session with Zakumi and CoCo from Kellogs seemed to be the highlight of the event as the kids were in tears of excitement. Coco surprised the kids with sweet giveaways. Some parents who watched the kids outside the pitch were impressed as the kids jollied the day away. With discounts for our members at food stores such as Wimpy and Pannarotis, the kids were spoiled with choice. Fun, laughter, entertainment and educational activities filled the event. With the event being held inside a miniature football pitch which was a preview of our African United Southgate Park 4 X 5- 8-a side pitches, added to the soccer fever that our Kidz Club experienced firsthand. | |

Southgate Mall’s Super Kidz Club hosted exciting and fun activities over the Easter period from 29 March to 01 April and 03 April 2010 at the Southgate Mall Centre Court. The activities included appearances and shows from Takalani Sesame and KFC’s Chicky.
The Mall was a roar with excitement as Takalani Sesame hosted educational shows, Chicky taught the kidz dance moves and tricks, there was an Easter Treasure Hunt, Story Telling, Magic Shows, Loads of give-aways and much more.
The Kidz Club members also enjoyed a wide variety of specials from their favourite shops in the mall such as discounted and free meals, desserts and toys.
Kids from the ages of 5 to 12 years old are encouraged to join The Southgate Super Kidz Club in order to be invited to future events and also to enjoy fantastic specials within the mall.
