August Kidz Club
Southgate Mall Super Kidz Club hosts monthly interactive, educational and entertainment filled events for all its members and the August event was a movie blast for members. SG Super Kidz Club members were invited to an exclusive movie premier of Furry Vengeance at Southgate Mall Ster Kinekor on the 8th August from 9am-12pm.

Members arrived as early as 8:00am, queuing for entry into the cinema. The children had stars in their eyes as the cinema doors opened at 8:30am. Thirty six children from Bethany and Bethesda Childrens home were treated to the premier. After registration all children went inside the theatre and received their complementary popcorn and cool drink.

The children were in high spirits during the movie as giggles and screams were heard throughout the movie duration. “I love this movie and I am happy that I have seen it before other people have seen it” added Bianca Le Roux, a SG Super Kidz Club member who watched the movie. Parents were grateful that the events vary monthly and the movie was a first experience for some members.”It’s the first time my boy-Sihle has watched a movie and he also received popcorns plus a drink thanks to the SG Kidz Club!” said Mr. Khoza.

Crowning Miss Soweto Runway Extravaganza Oozed Glamour at Southgate Mall
Southgate Mall proudly hosted a glamorous fashion show themed "Southgate Mall Crowning Miss Soweto Runway Extravaganza" with 20 Miss Soweto semi-finalists showcasing clothing from clothing stores in Southgate Mall to showcase the latest summer clothing on Saturday 24 July at the Wimpy Court.

The day started with Breakfast for the Miss Soweto finalists courtesy of Wimpy. The girls then headed to do make-up by Foschini who were using Maybelline products. Weave and styling of hair was done by The Knot Salon and Romeo and Juliet Salon inside the mall. Nalis were done by Tinys Nails & Beauty Salon and Romeo and Juliet. Eyelashes were implanted at Tiny's Nails.

The show started on a high note as the talented DJ V-neck from Soweto played music that rocked and rose to the occasion. Lebo Mokwena the MC for the day and a professional model doubled up as a stand-up comedian and had the crowd in stitches 'till the end of the show. The models showcased trends from Rage, Old Khaki, Pep, Exact, Fashion Express, Foschini, Truworths, Identity and Lee Cooper. Performances by Lady Zee and a Hip Hop dance crew were enjoyed by all.

The show ended with the Miss Soweto semi-finalists strutting down the runway in the "Perfect Black Dress" from Truworths, Edgars Foschini and Identity. Ralo Cosmetics brushed up makeup in between the show. Lunch was sponsored by KFC. Guest's present included Gang of Instrumental band members and Zama Mahlaba Trainee Manager of Southgate Mall thanked all participating tenants for the successful event and partnership. All the action from the show can be viewed on channel 150 on DSTV on the show Crowning Miss Soweto from mid August at time to be announced.

2010 Crowning Miss Soweto Semi-Finalists Chosen at Southgate Mall
Southgate Mall hosted 100 Miss Soweto hopefuls on Saturday 10 July from 11 am to 5 pm to a packed audience as they had to be narrowed to 20 semi-finalists. The semi-finalists will enter the Crowning Miss Soweto House, a 13 episode reality show which will see the 20 girls engaging in challenges with 8 semi-finalist being eliminated in daily challenges.

The semi final event was nail –biting as the 100 hopefuls all had to strut themselves in front of judges who questioned them individually. Judges included Miss South Africa 2009 Nicole Flint, Nompumelelo Molefe, Nimrod Nkosi, Lupi Ngayisa and Bianca Le grange. "Most of these girls have potential in the modeling industry and it is of importance that they understand that beauty needs to be associated with an out-going personality and good communication skills" added Miss SA 2009 Nicole Flint.

Performances by R J Benjamin, dancers Soweto 's Finest and Liquid Deep had the crowd screaming and dancing including the judges. Southgate Mall is a proud sponsor of the pagent this year as it is heading in a new dimension where the semi-finalists personality dynamics and potential will be known before the main event on the 29th October 2010.

2010 Winter Sidewalk Sale Oozed Value and Prizes!
Southgate Mall proudly hosted the Winter Sidewalk Sale for ten days from 25 June ending 05 July in the mall with participating stores ranging from beauty salons, fashion stores, furniture stores and financial institutions. The Winter Sidewalk Sale ended on a high note as a total of ten winners were selected daily during the duration of the sale winning a R 250.00 Southgate Gift card.

The winners were selected after entering their till slips from participating stores in the Winter Sidewalk Sale box at the Info Kiosk with their details. One winner Thembekhile Ndogeni who bought merchandise from Mr Price Home could not believe her luck when she was told she had won. “This is my first time in Gauteng and shopping in Southgate Mall, I am taking my husband out for dinner with my gift card, thanks to Southgate” said Thembekhile jubilantly.

Thato Matlanyane the store manager from Old Khaki excitedly confirmed that his daily turnover had increased during the duration of the Sidewalk Sale and two winners were chosen after purchasing from his store.”Southgate Winter Sidewalk Sale – 2010 brought excitement around the mall big time” concluded Thato.

Attitude Fashions won in the tenant competition compromising of a page dedicated to the shop on the Southgate Mall website for one month, a web banner, ten A1 posters will be placed around the mall of their shop and lots more. Attitude Fashions store manager Sagar Merai was excited when told of the good news. “I can not express my joy into words and grateful to be selected” said Samar.

Africa United Southgate Park : Launch
Southgate Mall in conjunction with Black Brain Group and Africa United held a launch of the Africa United Southgate Park on the 3rd June 2010 at Southgate Mall. The launch came after months of construction of the anticipated Africa United Southgate Park in the mall suitable for the whole family.

Southgate Mall was in full swing with a string of celebrities who filled the mall with explosive ambiance. The hype of the event was the media launch of the African United Southgate Park which is a first in South African Malls automatically making history and setting a trend that will be followed by other malls. The event started up in the foyer of the food court where celebrities, prominent guests and media indulged in breakfast supplied by Spur. Entertainment by Diski dancers kept the guests on their toes. After breakfast all guests were ushered into Ster Kenikor for an informative brief about the African United Southgate Park. From Ster Kenikor all guests were shuttled in luxury in the various Renault model cars to the African United Southgate Park which is on the side of the mall next to the N12 highway.

On arrival guests witnessed Miss South Africa 2009 Nicole Flint and Litha Sani a representative from the City of Johannesburg officially cut the ribbon of the opening of the park. As guests walked down the entrance of the park Champaign was served by Distel promoters and beverages were supplied by Vitamin Water. Guests were entertained by Lady Zee, Complete and Tebogo Ramokgadi. Thank you speeches by Black brain and Southgate concluded the event. Guests then had an intimate session were they mingled while the DJ entertained with the latest music.

The Park officially opened for the public on the 5th June 2010. The park is open Monday to Sunday from 09h00am- 21h00pm. Winter Warmer Staff Donation
Southgate Mall centre management staff donated clothing for the young and old in one of the Winter Warmer white boxes that are in the mall. Keep someone warm and bring a smile to the less privileged by donating clothing items in any of the white Winter Warmer boxes inside the mall.

Southgate Mall World Cup Opening Mania Event

Southgate Mall felt the official starting date of the 2010 World Cup for the first time on African soil and in close proximity at Soccer City by hosting an event themed “Southgate Mall World Cup opening mania” at the Wimpy Court on Friday 11 June 2010 in celebration of this historic accomplishment.


The event started at 12:00pm with music exciting the crowd filled with the young and old. Children were seated at the Wimpy Court writing their good luck messages to Bafana Bafana while a section was dedicated for face painting with over 300 adults faces painted in the South African flag. The crowd was taught the diski dance which was the highlight of the event with the crowd dancing in craze.


Shoppers were urged to shop for R200, enter their slip into a draw box and four winners were announced, they won a goodie bag consisting of Marlin stationery, vuvuzelas, soccer balls, football Friday mini bags and more. The event ended off with the children reading out to the crowd their Bafana Bafana goodluck messages followed by the South African National Athem being sung by all.


This event united Southgate Mall shoppers and tenants as they joyfully blew their vuvuzelas and dressed in football outfits. The Mall has also geared up for the World Cup in style as flags of all countries participating in the tournament have been hung around the mall.


The official 2010 World Cup opening ceremony kicked off at 13h30 at Soccer City which is in close radius to Southgate Mall, “Southgate Mall World Cup opening mania” added to the historic legacy that the World Cup will leave in Africa. The World Cup opening match was viewed at no charge at the Africa United Southgate Park and on the LCD screens in the Food Court.

Sunday Nkambule celebrated his 40th Birthday

Head of Class Salon Manager Sunday Nkambule celebrated his 40th birthday on the 14th June 2010 in style by pampering six children from Barona Child Care and Support at Southgate Mall. At 10:30am the children arrived at Head of Class the Salon that Sunday manages on a daily basis in Southgate Mall. Accompanied by two caregivers Thuli Khubeka and Titi Sealanyane the children were excited to be beneficiaries of Sundays 40th birthday and celebrating it with him.

Friends that assisted in the success of the festivities for the children of this birthday was Bafana Zondo who is a lab assistant at Spec Savers in Southgate Mall, FNB in Southgate Mall and Head of Class patrons who have been donating money since early March 2010. FNB Service Manager Lungelo Ngabaza and the CSR Mr Shane Sono were instrumental in the success of the birthday celebrations. “I am happy, proud of Sunday as he has set a good example for everybody” said Lungelo Ngabaza. The birthday goodie bag contained of items that are mandatory for success in life for these children. The birthday goodie bag contained pens, highlighters, FNB scarf’s, a vuvuzela and a soccer ball and school shoes. “Barona Children Care Support was chosen as beneficiaries reasoning children are close to my heart and these children deserve all the love and luxuraries that he can give know on this particular day” said Sunday.

Background facts about Sunday Nkambule


Sunday grew up in Mpumalanga in a poverty stricken household where he had to walk to school. He arrived in Gauteng Province in April 1988. He started working for Head of Class in 1998 as a stylist where he then moved to a branch at Southgate Mall in 2000. He was promoted to Stylists Manager. In 2004 he left his employment and occupied a vacancy of Director of Stylists at The Knot Salon from 2005- mid 2007. He then established his own hair zone were his clientele grew by the day from mid 2007 to March 2008. His dream was to pamper children for lunch and movies on one of his birthdays ideally on the 14th of June 2010. Sunday lives in Orange Farm and has four children whom the eldest daughter is Nomzamo who is 16 years old.

SOUTHGATE MALL SUPER KIDZ CLUB EVENT REPORT: MAY 2010
Southgate Mall Super Kidz Club is interactive, exciting, educational, and informative for all its members - this event was no exception. This fun filled event was themed “Dress up as your favourite character”. The event started from 11h00am and ended at 14h30pm at the Wimpy Court in Southgate Mall on the 29th May 2010.

The educational and entertaining activities that the kids engaged in ranged from making new friends, colouring in, fitting puzzles to reading books. An Angel narrated a story telling session where kids were entertained and joined in with the animation. A photo session with Zakumi and CoCo from Kellogs seemed to be the highlight of the event as the kids were in tears of excitement. Coco surprised the kids with sweet giveaways. Some parents who watched the kids outside the pitch were impressed as the kids jollied the day away.

With discounts for our members at food stores such as Wimpy and Pannarotis, the kids were spoiled with choice. Fun, laughter, entertainment and educational activities filled the event. With the event being held inside a miniature football pitch which was a preview of our African United Southgate Park 4 X 5- 8-a side pitches, added to the soccer fever that our Kidz Club experienced firsthand.

Wimpy - offered all club members meals at 20% discount making all kiddies meals R 23. 99 and supplied a free juice/coldrink/milkshake, toy and balloon.

Southgate Mall celebrates the 50 Day Countdown and Launches the Africa United Southgate Park
Southgate Mall hosted a 50 Day countdown celebration and launched the Africa United Southgate Park in conjunction with Jozi FM, Black Brain Pictures and DSTV on Wednesday, 21 April 2010 at the Wimpy Court in the Mall.

The mall had a feast of entertainment with a line up including Buchanan Orchestra playing soothing sounds to the audience then RnB sensation, Complete leading the public into the National Anthem, Vuvuzelas playing as the diski dancers taught the crowd the diski dance, Dinganga Theatre Creation entertaining the public with a traditional dance performance, followed by celebrities playing an indoor soccer match and the day finished off with live performances by Gang of Instrumentals, Howza, O-Man, DJ Cuba, Spy Two and DJ Mayibuye.

The Africa United Southgate Park is a fully equipped soccer playground and entertainment deck comprising of:
- 4x 5 to 8-a-side action soccer pitches
- Entertainment Deck - Entertainment Stage for live performances
- Gaming section
- Lounge with plasma screens for live soccer screening
- Food and Beverages section
- A kiddies play section – with child supervision
- A Shisa Nyama (braai) section where food and beverages will be available on weekends

Southgate Mall Super Kidz Club makes Easter unforgettable

Southgate Mall’s Super Kidz Club hosted exciting and fun activities over the Easter period from 29 March to 01 April and 03 April 2010 at the Southgate Mall Centre Court. The activities included appearances and shows from Takalani Sesame and KFC’s Chicky.

The Mall was a roar with excitement as Takalani Sesame hosted educational shows, Chicky taught the kidz dance moves and tricks, there was an Easter Treasure Hunt, Story Telling, Magic Shows, Loads of give-aways and much more.

The Kidz Club members also enjoyed a wide variety of specials from their favourite shops in the mall such as discounted and free meals, desserts and toys.

Kids from the ages of 5 to 12 years old are encouraged to join The Southgate Super Kidz Club in order to be invited to future events and also to enjoy fantastic specials within the mall.
